The cheeks are a beautiful facial feature. Be that a gentle curve or more striking contour, they are paramount in the overall structure and balance of the face.

When treating cheeks with filler, the nuances of individual anatomy must be observed with the correct product micro-sculpted within the parameters of the individual anatomy. It is important to address shadows from volume loss or created by the grooves occurring from the separation of fat-pads in the mid face. Equally maintaining appropriate lift and surface tension in the tissue is important. All of this must be delivered whilst maintaining the natural flow to the face, be that a gentle curve or existing, angular definition. If ever the phrase “a millimetre is a mile” is more apt, it is when it comes to the cheeks.

Cheek filler has become extremely popular over the last decade. Everybody is different in terms of product choice, quantity and placement. Some suit gentle cheekbone enhancement and contours, others are better placed with filler to the hairline, gently sculpted into the top of the cheekbone. For a subtle convexity to the mid face, Polynucleotides are more suitable. To support the tail end of a tear trough and/or soften a malar groove (mid face fat pad separation) a filler that is not hydrophilic (water retentive) is essential.

The mid face has many variable and angles to consider when sculpting and maintain a natural look both at rest and upon animation.

The Process

1. Assessment

The cheeks are examined from multiple angles, at rest and on animation. By both touching and moving the tissue, as well as a keen eye, deficits and key points for anchoring and sculpting are identified. Hyaluronic acid filler with different properties for different indications is decided upon, depending on individual anatomical parameters.

Local anaesthetic is applied as a topical cream and often injected as a nerve block in some key areas. Once numbed, the skin is cleansed and sterilised. Appropriate amounts of appropriate filler is gently injected at different levels in the soft tissue. This ensures subtle lift and natural flow.

2. Filler Injection

  • You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site. Uneven swelling is normal and should balance out as it subsides. These effects typically resolve within a few days to two weeks.

  • Bruising can occur despite precautions to avoid it. If bruising happens, it will typically be apparent immediately after treatment. Bruises may change colour as they heal, from red to purple, black, green, and eventually yellow. Using Arnica and Vitamin K cream can help speed up the healing process.

  • We aim for subtle, natural results, which take 2-4 weeks to fully settle. A review can be scheduled afterward, where additional filler can be added for a fee, or, if needed, filler can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase.

  • Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Numbing cream and local anaesthetic are used for added comfort.

  • It’s best to avoid applying makeup for 12-24 hours after your filler procedure to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection site.
