Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

From £550

It’s common to carry stress in the muscles of the jaw, which can lead to inadvertent teeth grinding, particularly when sleeping. There’s been a progressive increase in patients presenting for Botox to relax tense jaw muscles, as the procedure is extremely effective.

Botox offers softening and debulking of an overworked jaw muscle. The reduction in action brings relief to tight jaws and the potential for chipping teeth.

For those who wish to soften the muscles yet maintain a defined jawline, this may be achieved with the use of filler. Equally the extent of relaxation and softening may be tailored.

Tiny needles are used to inject Botox deep into the masseter muscle, with little to no pain. As the largest muscle in the head, it takes longer to be in effect than other muscles of the face, with results seen at 4 weeks and effects lasting approximately 6 months.

The Process

1. Botox Injection

The skin is cleansed and sterilised. You will be asked to bite down whilst the area is palpated to identify the areas of greatest tension. Once the positioning and quantity is calculated, tiny needles are used to inject Botox directly into the masseter muscle. This targets specific areas to relieve tension while ensuring comfort.

2. Review and the option filler

By resting the muscle tension, the mass of the muscle is also lessened. This may lead to less definition at the jawline angle. Whilst some people find a softer, more oval aesthetic desirable, others like to maintain a more defined angle. It is possible to achieve both a relaxing of tension and sculpted angle by sculpting with filler at the time of review (4-6 weeks post treatment).

Frequently asked questions

  • You may experience swelling, redness, tenderness, and bruising at the injection site. Uneven swelling is normal and should balance out as it subsides. These effects typically resolve within a few days to two weeks.

  • Bruising can occur despite precautions to avoid it. If bruising happens, it will typically be apparent immediately after treatment. Bruises may change colour as they heal, from red to purple, black, green, and eventually yellow. Using Arnica and Vitamin K cream can help speed up the healing process.

  • We aim for subtle, natural results, which take 2-4 weeks to fully settle. A review can be scheduled afterward, where additional filler can be added for a fee, or, if needed, filler can be adjusted or dissolved with hyaluronidase.

  • Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. Numbing cream and local anaesthetic are used for added comfort.

  • It’s best to avoid applying makeup for 12-24 hours after your filler procedure to reduce the risk of infection or irritation at the injection site.
